Description

MIWA: A SUPERB WOOD NETSUKE OF FUJIN SMOKING A PIPE

By Miwa, signed Miwa 三輪 with ‘seal’ kakihan
Japan, Edo (Tokyo), 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Published:
Meinertzhagen, Frederick (1956), The Art of the Netsuke Carver, p. 60, no. 20, pl. III.
Meinertzhagen, Frederick / Lazarnick, George (1986) MCI, Part A, p. 568.

A remarkably powerful netsuke carved from plum or isu wood, of an attractive grain and color, depicting the God of Wind seated cross-legged, leaning against his large wind bag propped to the side, toying with the clasp of his tabako-ire as he takes a drag from his kiseru (pipe), appearing worn-out from a hard day’s work. The face with a displeased expression, deep wrinkles, and eyes with pierced pupils under furrowed brows. Very generously excavated, asymmetrical himotoshi to the underside and signed MIWA with ‘seal’ kakihan.

LENGTH 5 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with minor surface wear.
Provenance: Ex-collection Edward Gilbertson. Ex-collection Frederick Meinertzhagen. Ex-collection Charles F. Stein (1900–1979), Baltimore, acquired from the above, and thence by descent.

The ‘seal’ kakihan on the present netsuke corresponds to kakihan number ‘B’ in the list of kakihan by Miwa, presented by F. Meinertzhagen in MCI, Part A, p. 560. This kakihan corresponds with those found on other early and often large Miwa carvings.
