? GYOKUYOSAI: A FINE IVORY NETSUKE OF ASHINAGA WITH A DRUM

Published: Zacke (1986) Netsuke Inro und andere Sagemono, no. 86.

Depicting the folkloric figure Ashinaga (long-legs) with a drum slung over his back, a drumstick tucked into his obi, one of his legs raised in a startled manner as he looks to his right, mouth agape and eyes widened. Two himotoshi to the back and signed GYOKUYOSAI. The lightly worn ivory bearing a fine patina.

HEIGHT 8 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and expected age cracks. The left foot with a small abrasion to the edge.
Provenance: Ex-collection Marcel Lorber (1900-1986). Zacke, Japanische Netsuke, Inro und andere Sagemono - Ausstellung 1986, no. 86. From an Austrian private collection, acquired from the above.

Mitsuhina Gyokuyosai (1881-1868) lived in Asakusa, Tokyo, and was a teacher of Ozaki Kokusai (1835-1892).
