Description

? GYOKUZAN: A VERY RARE IVORY NETSUKE OF A KAPPA STEALING EBISU’S SHIRIKODAMA

By Gyokuzan, signed Gyokuzan 玉山
Japan, Tokyo, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Amusingly carved as the lucky god Ebisu seated holding a knife and looking back towards a kappa who points suggestively at the shirikodama (mythical anus ball) which the water goblin has just removed from Ebisu’s behind, a basket filled with fish between them. The details are superbly picked out, some red staining is used for the mouths and the ivory is lightly stained. Asymmetrical himotoshi and signed underneath Ebisu’s foot GYOKUZAN - considering the fineness of the carving this is very likely Asahi Gyokuzan (1843-1923).

LENGTH 4.3 cm

Condition: Very good condition, minor age cracks and a possible loss to the object held in Ebisu’s hand.
Provenance: From an Austrian private collection.

Kappa (lit. "river-child") are amphibious yokai found in traditional Japanese folklore. They are usually seen as mischievous troublemakers or trickster figures. They are often accused of assaulting humans in water and removing a mythical organ called the shirikodama from their victim's anus. Here, in a rare and humorous representation imbued with character and wit, the God of Fishermen, Ebisu, has fallen victim to such an attack.
