? KIKUGAWA: A LARGE IVORY MANJU NETSUKE OF ONIWAKAMARU SLAYING THE CARP

By Kikugawa Ryukoku, signed with the artist’s kakihan
Japan, Edo (Tokyo), mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of circular form, the thick manju finely carved in shishiaibori (sunken relief) and painted in sumi (ink) with Oniwakamaru about to slay the giant carp with his knife. The eye pupil of the carp inlaid in black horn with a metal rim. The reverse depicting rockwork and signed with the artist’s kakihan.

DIAMETER 6.2 cm

Condition: Very good condition, minor wear and few expected natural age cracks.
Provenance: Lempertz, Asian Art, 6 December 2014, Cologne, lot 879. A private collection in Luxembourg, acquired from the above.

Compare a closely related ivory manju netsuke of Oniwakamaru slaying the carp, by Kikugawa, dated to the mid-19th century, illustrated in Davey, Neil K. (1974) Netsuke: A Comprehensive Study Based on the M.T. Hindson Collection, no. 406.
