Description

? A LARGE AND RARE WALRUS TUSK RYUSA MANJU NETSUKE DEPICTING A KARYOBINGA AND TENNIN

Unsigned
Japan, Edo (Tokyo), mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Superbly carved in openwork to depict a pair of Buddhist angels mid-flight, their celestial scarves swaying gracefully in the wind as they fly high among dense clouds. One holds the sho (mouth organ), while the other beats an otsuzumi (drum) suspended from her neck. Each carved sensitively, their facial features reflect their beauty and divinity as they smile gracefully, and the hair fashioned into an elaborate chignon backed by a tiara centered by an inlaid medallion. The walrus ivory bearing a lovely, warm, and lustrous patina. Large, asymmetrical, ringed himotoshi to the back.

DIAMETER 5.8 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and expected natural age cracks.

The karyobinga (kalavinca in Sanskrit) is a fantastical immortal creature in Buddhism, with a human head and a bird's torso, with long flowing tail. It is known for its heavenly music, its voice being a descriptor of the Buddha's voice, and is said to sing while still unhatched within its eggshell.

Tennin (apsara in Sanskrit) are celestial maidens or nymphs in Hindu and Buddhist mythology. They are divine female spirits known for their ethereal beauty and grace, often depicted as dancers or musicians in the heavenly courts of the gods.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related large ryusa ivory manju netsuke depicting the same subject, by Ono Ryomin, illustrated in in Davey, Neil K. (1982) Netsuke: A comprehensive study based on the M.T. Hindson Collection, no. 321.
