Description

A TALL AND IMPRESSIVE CORAL, LACQUER AND WOOD NETSUKE OF A SOUTH SEA ISLANDER

Unsigned
Japan, Edo (Tokyo), early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Depicting a South Sea islander, standing with one hand raised pulling his eyelid down in a bekkako gesture and mischievously hiding a bright red coral branch behind his back. The islander is dressed only in a gold-lacquered loincloth, his head bald except for a few short curls, his emaciated body well-carved and detailed with ribs and folds to the side of his belly. Generously excavated and asymmetrical himotoshi through the back.

HEIGHT 10.2 cm

Condition: Good condition with minor wear. Repairs to the index finger of the right hand and to the coral branch.

Auction comparison:
The only other recorded netsuke depicting an islander making the bekkako gesture is illustrated in Lazarnick, George (1981) Netsuke & Inro Artists, and How to Read Their Signatures (LNIA), Vol. 2, p. 1181. This netsuke by Tosui, similarly designed, was recently sold at Christie’s (there described as a kappa), Japanese and Korean Art, 17 September 2024, New York, lot 160 (sold for USD 7,560).
