Description

A RARE AND LARGE CORAL AND WOOD NETSUKE OF A SOUTH SEA ISLANDER ON A RAFT

Unsigned
Japan, Edo (Tokyo), mid to late 19th century

An impressive and large netsuke, amusingly crafted, depicting a South Sea islander on an irregularly shaped raft which he uses to transport a gigantic piece of coral, attached via gold and silver wire to the ebony wood base. He is holding onto a silver wire and stretches his legs out for stability as his raft is floating above turbulent waves. The figure of stained boxwood, dressed in a short loin cloth with incised karakusa, the eyes inlaid in mother-of-pearl centered by dark horn pupils, and framed by bushy eyebrows. The himotoshi formed by a silver loop to the underside.

LENGTH 8.8 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor expected wear and traces of use.

Auction comparison:
Compare a closely related ebony, coral, and ivory netsuke of two South Sea islanders, by Jugyoku Ryukosai II, dated to circa 1880, at Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art including two masterpieces by Kitaoji Rosanjin (1883-1959), 7 November 2013, London, lot 81 (sold for GBP 6,000, or approx. EUR 9,855 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). Note the similar use of gold wire and the much smaller size (5.7 cm).
