Description

A WOOD NETSUKE OF EBISU STRUGGLING WITH AN OCTOPUS

Unsigned
Japan, Edo (Tokyo), mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Dynamically carved to depict Ebisu struggling with an octopus which has tightly ensnared the Lucky God’s foot. The deity pressing his weight down with full force as he attempts to squash the cephalopod’s efforts, the octopus adamant, not yet ready to give up its valiant attempts to trap the deity despite being amusingly flattened under his weight. The deity smiles as he looks straight ahead, his face framed by a tall eboshi and flowing beard. Natural himotoshi through one tentacle to the underside.

HEIGHT 3.7 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear.

Auction comparison:
The Lucky God Ebisu, patron of fishermen, is much more commonly depicted with a sea bream, and the octopus here could be interpreted as shunga. See for example an ivory netsuke of Ebisu and an octopus, where this shunga dynamic is more obvious, at Lempertz, Netsuke-Sammlung Kolodtoschko II, 6 December 2014, Cologne, lot 729 (sold for EUR 3,720).
