Description

SHUZAN: A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF A PRIEST WITH THE BUNBUKU CHAGAMA

By Shuzan, signed Shuzan 舟山
Japan, Edo (Tokyo), early to mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Finely carved to depict the scene of the popular folktale Bunbuku-chagama (literally “Bunbuku tea-kettle”), in which a priest is holding a kettle that turns into a tanuki. The kettle is inscribed ‘Bunbuku’ and fitted with two gilt-metal loop handles. The priest dressed in a long robe, has a charmingly carved expression with a gentle smile, clearly delighted with his fortune. Asymmetrical and generously excavated himotoshi to the underside beside the signature SHUZAN.

LENGTH 3.7 cm

Condition: Good condition with minor wear, tiny nibbles, light surface scratches, few minuscule losses, the handles replaced, and one section at the edge of the kettle repaired.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related wood netsuke of the badger tea kettle legend, by the same artist and signed Shuzan, illustrated in The International Netsuke Society Journal (INSJ), vol. 25, no. 1, p. 25, lot 1373.
