Description

? A FINE IVORY NETSUKE OF A DRAGON EMERGING FROM AN ASH POT (HAIFUKI KARA RYU)

Unsigned
Japan, Edo (Tokyo), first half of the 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of triangular sankaku type and compact design, finely carved as a dragon emerging from an ash container and resting its head on the handle of the tabako-bon. Two small himotoshi to the underside of the cloudy smoke base. Unsigned, however stylistically this is from the early Tomochika school in Edo (Tokyo).

LENGTH 4.4 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor expected wear and natural age cracks.

The present netsuke illustrates the proverb haifuki kara ryu (‘a dragon issuing from an ash container’), which is analogous to the expression hyotan kara koma (‘a horse out of a gourd’), both conveying the idea of something unexpected happening.

Auction comparison:
For a related ivory netsuke of a coiled dragon, by Chikuyosai Tomochika, 4.5 cm wide, see Bonhams, The Harriet Szechenyi Sale of Japanese Art, 8 November 2011, London, lot 104 (sold for GBP 3,000).

Trade Certificate: The trade certificate for the sale of this lot within the EU has been granted (permit number DE-K -241031-504).

This item contains ivory, rhinoceros horn, tortoise shell, and/or some types of tropical wood and is subject to CITES when exporting outside the EU. It is typically not possible to export such items outside of the EU, including to the UK. Therefore, after this item has the necessary trade certificate, it can only be shipped within the EU or picked up in our gallery in person.
