Description

A GROUP LOT WITH THREE BOW-SHAPED DZI BEADS

Tibet, 19th century or earlier. Each of bow-shaped form, with distinct and finely crafted designs. One bead features four eyes on light-colored agate, accented by natural inclusions. The second bead shows seven indistinctly marked stripes, etched onto amber-colored carnelian agate. The third is a natural banded agate of amber color with lighter stripes. All with central drilling allowing for suspension as a pendant.

Provenance: Old Austrian private collection.
Condition: Good condition, with natural patina, small chips, and rubbings to the edges. Typical traces of use and age-related minor wear.

Weight: 11 g – 15 g
Dimensions: Length 4.8 cm

Natural banded Dzi beads are highly valued for their organic beauty and spiritual significance, as their patterns are not artificially etched but rather formed by the natural mineral layering of agate over millions of years. These bands create fluid, wave-like or striped formations, symbolizing balance, energy flow, and the harmony between natural and cosmic forces. They are most often worn as protective amulets, and are sometimes ground into a powder for use in traditional Tibetan medicine.

The Four-Eye Dzi bead is believed to bring wisdom, stability, and protection, representing the four Bodhisattvas of Buddhism or the four cardinal directions. It is associated with removing obstacles, enhancing clarity, and strengthening leadership qualities.

The Seven-Stripe Dzi bead are associated with spiritual insight, success, and power. The number seven holds deep significance in Buddhism, representing the Seven Factors of Enlightenment: mindfulness, investigation, energy, joy, tranquility, concentration, and equanimity. A seven-striped Dzi is believed to bring balance and guidance, helping the wearer achieve personal and professional success while maintaining inner harmony. In addition, this pattern is thought to correspond to the Seven Treasures of Buddhism: faith, discipline, generosity, wisdom, morality, patience, and knowledge.
