A GROUP LOT WITH TWO TASSO TIGER THOOTH, A TWO-EYE AND A TWO-STRIPE DZI BEADS

Tibet, 19th century or earlier. Each of elongated tubular form, featuring three distinct designs: two with a Tasso Tiger Tooth pattern, one with a classic three-eye motif, and one with a three-stripe design, all skillfully etched to the surfaces. Crafted from dark brown agate with white etched patterns. Over time, some of the beads have developed Naga skin weathering marks, a highly desirable feature that signifies age and spiritual potency. All with central drilling allowing for suspension as a pendant.

Provenance: Old Austrian private collection.
Condition: Good condition, with natural patina, fading, and rubbings to the edges. Typical traces of use and age-related minor wear.

Weight: 8 g – 9 g
Dimensions: Length 3.1 cm

The Tiger Tooth Dzi bead is a powerful symbol of strength, courage, and protection. It is associated with the ferocity and resilience of the tiger, an animal revered in Tibetan culture for its fearlessness and dominance over negative forces. The sharp, angular stripes represent the tiger's fangs, signifying the ability to ward off evil, conquer obstacles, and instill confidence in the wearer. They are most often worn as protective amulets, and are sometimes ground into a powder for use in traditional Tibetan medicine. The artisans who make the Dzi embellish the lines and shapes of the beads using ancient methods such as darkening with plant sugar and heat, bleaching and etching white lines with natron, and protecting certain areas with fat, clay, wax, or a similar substance.

The Three-Eye Dzi bead is one of the most powerful symbols of prosperity, wisdom, and success in Tibetan culture. It represents the three deities of wealth and spiritual power: Dzambhala (prosperity), Manjushri (wisdom), and Vajrapani (strength). This bead is believed to attract financial abundance, enhance intelligence, and empower the wearer with confidence and resilience.

The Three-Stripe Dzi bead symbolizes harmony, and the balance of mind, body, and spirit. In Tibetan and Buddhist traditions, the number three represents the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha), as well as the past, present, and future, signifying spiritual alignment and continuity.

Naga skin weathering refers to the natural crackled or textured surface that appears on aged Dzi beads, resembling the scales of a Naga, the mystical serpent deity in Tibetan and Hindu traditions. In Tibetan culture, Nagas are guardians of wisdom, hidden treasures, and spiritual knowledge. The presence of Naga skin patterns on a Dzi bead is considered highly auspicious.
