The Luohan is carved with strong features highlighted with strong incised marks, carved with sharp cheek bones, large well defined mouth, knitted brows under a frowning forehead; the protruding eyes are with a strong spiritual feeling.
Provenance: With Jacques Barrère Gallery, Paris and illustrated in the catalogue Sculptures d'Asie, 2004, item no. 19.
Catalogue notes: Whether they are holy men, monks or mere disciples of Buddha, Luohans are always presented as wise men who have fully realized the Buddhist doctrine within themselves. A head of a Luohan similar in material, shape and expression can be found in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco and published in Hai-Wai Yi Chen, Chinese Art in Overseas Collections, Buddhist Sculpture, VOL. II, The National Palace Museum, Taipei, pg. 166, no. 156.
Condition: With traces of lacquer decoration, chips and losses to the extremities and age cracks to wood consistent with age.
