拍品描述
China, 1736-1795. Carved in the form of a circular, incurving flower head, with an outcurving section on one side forming a spout for pouring. A highly articulated branch coils around most of the vessel, its flower heads facing upward along the rim. A single bird perches delicately on one of the branches, adding a lively touch to the composition. The translucent stone is of an even pale celadon color with light russet areas and cloudy white inclusions. The surface shows a good polish with an unctuous feel overall.Provenance: V. Akchote, Paris, 1969. A private collection in France, acquired from the above, and thence by descent. A copy of a certificate from V. Akchote, Paris, dated 10 January 1969, and confirming the dating above, accompanies the lot. V. Akchote, Paris, France, was a noted dealer of modern and ancient jewelry, works of art, and Asian art, located on the famous Rue de Rivoli, just around the corner from the Louvre and the Musee des Arts Decoratifs. Because of this prestigious location, Akchote attracted collectors from around the world. It is said that in the late 1960s, the firm counted fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent and actress Brigitte Bardot among its clientele. Condition: Good condition with minor old wear, few small nicks to exposed areas. The stone with natural fissures and inclusions.Weight: 173.6 g Dimensions: Length 12.1 cmThe use of jade cups in China was a complex matter. Daoist adepts believed jade had a preserving effect on the human body. Eating and drinking vessels made of jade were also symbols of affluence and privilege for those who could afford them. During the last few centuries of the Imperial era, jade cups were also displayed as expensive decorative items.Literature comparison:Compare a related jade cup, dated to the 16th-17th century, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number 635-1875.
