AN INSIDE-PAINTED CHALCEDONY 'FISH' SNUFF BOTTLE, BY MENG ZISHOU, DATED 1909

Published: Robert Hall, The Button Collection, Chinese Snuff Bottles X, London, 2003, no. 83.China. Well hollowed, the bottle of rectangular form with slanted shoulders, supported on an oval foot, surmounted by a cylindrical neck with slightly concave mouth, dating from circa 1750-1850, and later repurposed by the artist. The stone is of a pale gray color with dark brown and amber areas as well as dark brown speckles.Finely painted on the interior with various fish, including goldfish and a fan-tailed carp, swimming among water reeds. The natural inclusions of the stone have been cleverly integrated to mimic the surface of the water.Inscriptions: One side, dated 'In the summer of the year Jiyou (corresponding to 1909)' and signed, 'Meng Zishou'. Provenance: The Button Collection, Belgium. Robert Hall, London, 2003. Collection of Toni Daniels, Bermuda, acquired from the above. The Button Collection was formed over more than 20 years with an emphasis on porcelain, glass, and snuff bottles. Robert Hall is one of the leading dealers of Chinese Snuff Bottles. He has played a vital role in the formation of many of the world's great collections, including the Mary and George Bloch Collection. His wide knowledge of the subject has enabled him to produce numerous publications and articles, such as his series Chinese Snuff Bottles I to XVI (1987-2011). Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and minuscule nibbling, and natural fissures. Diameter neck 18 mm and mouth 7 mm.Meng Zishou was active in Beijing in the first two decades of the twentieth century. While skilled at depicting landscapes and portraits, he also produced many bottles of fish swimming amid water weeds. He was a follower of Zhou Leyuan and numbered amongst the Beijing School artists. His fan-tailed goldfish, while taken from Ye Zhongsan's, are distinctively different.
