拍品描述
CENTURYChina, Beijing. Of compressed globular form, supported on an oval foot, neatly carved and incised in low relief to each side with a three clawed dragon surrounded by clouds confronting a chilong emerging from crashing waves. The translucent glass is of a rich ruby-red color. Note the very large mouth.Provenance: From a private collection of Chinese snuff bottles in the United Kingdom, assembled in Hong Kong during the 1960s and 1970s, and thence by descent. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, little nibbling around the mouth and foot, light surface scratches, some tiny open bubbles to the mouth. The stopper with natural fissures. Stopper: Jadeite on a black platelet, carved spoonWeight: 90.7 gDimensions: Height including stopper 70 mm. Diameter of the neck 20 mm and mouth 13 mm.Ruby glass was a staple at the Palace workshops. In Moss, Graham, Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles, Vol. 5, Glass, p. 18, it is suggested that during the early years of the Imperial glassworks, from 1696 into the early decades of the eighteenth century, it might have been a closely guarded secret, slowly leaking out to other workshops over time. We can be reasonably certain that ruby-red glass was produced during the Kangxi and Yongzheng periods, but the absence of reign marks on so many glass snuff bottles does not allow us to differentiate between Qianlong and pre-Qianlong examples.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's New York, 19 September 2007, lot 656Price: USD 25,000 or approx.
