拍品描述
China, c. 4500-2500 BC. Raised on three tall bulbous legs, two applied with narrow serrated bands and the third with a strap handle, the neck flaring towards the upward-angled, pinched spout.Provenance: From a private collection in New York, United States.Condition: Excellent condition, commensurate with age, with expected ancient wear, fine cracks, encrustations, firing irregularities, the spout with small losses and repairs.Weight: 1,601 gDimensions: Height 35 cmNeolithic tripod ewers from various cultures differ slightly in form but all share the same skillfully designed functionality. The Dawenkou culture (previously known as Longshan to describe Neolithic cultures in the Shandong area) is characterized by elaborate ceramic forms such as this three-legged vessel. Early ceramics served many purposes over their more functional use. Ordinary vessels could have been made more elaborate for ritual use. Since most activities took place at ground level, it was thought their height may have distinguished them from ordinary wares. As a raised vessel commanded a greater presence and was more appropriate for ceremony than a flat or round-bottomed one.Literature comparison:Compare a related Longshan black ware tripod food vessel, li, 2000-1700 BC, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number C.34-1962.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 31 May 2023, lot 814Price: HKD 304,800 or approx.
