拍品描述
China, 18th-19th century. Carved in openwork as a monkey clambering on a branch bearing two outsized pomegranates, the brown inclusions of the stone cleverly utilized to highlight a band terminating in ruyi-heads to the lower section. The jade pierced below the monkey's left arm for suspension. The stone is of a pale celadon color transitioning to a light brown to one side and with icy white inclusions throughout.Provenance: French trade, apparently acquired in a house near St. Paul de Vence on the French Riviera. Condition: Very good condition with minor old wear. Weight: 56.7 g Dimensions: Length 4.9 cmThe use of puns and rebuses to express wishes for good fortune, longevity, prosperity, and even academic success has been a common theme in Chinese art. As the Chinese character for 'seed' (zi) is the same as that for 'son', the many-seeded pomegranate is viewed as a symbol for having multiple sons who are expected to continue the family line. Monkeys are associated with nobility and high status because the Chinese word for 'monkey' (hou) is a homophone for 'marquis', a noble title. Together, the monkey and pomegranate depicted in this carving represents the wish for many successful children.
