拍品描述
A FINE WHITE JADE 'SCHOLAR' SNUFF BOTTLE, SUZHOU SCHOOL, 1760-1840Expert's note: A classic characteristic of the 'pictorial' mood of the Suzhou School is the use of the outer russet skin of jade riverbed pebbles to enhance the design or carving. According to Yang Boda's study of 18th-century jade wares, this technique can be directly attributed to Suzhou carvers. Its use served two distinct purposes: one aesthetic and the other commercial. Aesthetically, the russet skin was skillfully incorporated to create a more naturalistic design, often depicting mountains and woods, while the white jade core represented rivers and waterfalls, as seen in the present lot. Commercially, jade at the time was valued and sold by weight in addition to material quality, making the preservation of the outer skin economically advantageous even in finished works of art.China. Well hollowed, the flattened rounded body tapering towards the flat oval foot and surmounted by a slightly tapered neck. Finely carved and incised with a continuous scene depicting a scholar enjoying the view towards a distant mountain, framed by serrated rockwork and lush trees, all below thick misty clouds. The translucent stone is of a fine white color with areas of pale russet and brown, cleverly used by the lapidary to highlight the rockwork and trees, as well as scattered cloudy inclusions. Inscriptions: The stopper with a sterling silver (wenyin) and Tianxing hall mark.Provenance: From a private estate in Texas, United States. Condition: Excellent condition with minor old wear and natural imperfections including fissures and inclusions. Stopper: Rose quartz on black platelet, carved spoonWeight: 75.4 gDimensions: Height including stopper 66 mm. Diameter neck 17 mm and mouth 6 mm.The town of Suzhou, famous for its gardens and canals, was also one of the main cultural centers in China, attracting many painters, calligraphers, poets, musicians and other talented individuals. Their pursuits and interests form the main subject matter of the group of acclaimed snuff bottles intricately carved from agate and jade in a style unique to the workshop associated with Zhiting, a famous jade carver from the area.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's New York, 14 September 2010, lot 67 Price: USD 110,500 or approx.
