Provenance: Ben Janssens Oriental Art, London, 2016. Ben Janssens opened his eponymous gallery in 1996 in London, specializing in early Chinese art. Previously he had been a director at Spink & Son. Objects made from this material are known as Tian-nan qong qing and were first made during the Tang dynasty. The Baxian (Eight Immortals) are a legendary group of Chinese heroes who fight to vanquish evil. They comprise Lu Dongbin, He Xiangu, Lan Caihe, Zhang Guolao, Han Xiangzi, Zhong Liquan, Li Tieguai, and Cao Guojiu. Popular during the Tang and Shang dynasties, the Eight Immortals were said to live on a group of five islands in the Bohai Sea. Their stories were first recorded by the Ming dynasty poet Wu Yuantai. Their status as fabled folk icons makes them well-known in popular culture.Their attributes (anbaxian) became a decorative motif in their own right during the Qing dynasty, first appearing on porcelains of the Yongzheng period. On this box they include Lan Caihe's basket of flowers, Han Xiangzi's flute, Han Zhongli's fan, Zhang Guolao's fish drum, Lu Dongbin's sword and fly whisk, and Li Tieguai's gourd. The combination of shou roundels and these attributes highlights the theme of longevity (baxian qingshou).Literature comparison:Compare a related coconut bowl lined with gold, dated to the Qing dynasty, 13.5 cm in Diameter, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, inventory number 故00122356-3/24.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's Hong Kong, 12 December 2024, lot 1614Estimate: HKD 40,000 or approx.
