A RARE GILT BRONZE HAND OF PADMAPANI, NEPAL, 14TH CENTURY
奥地利

拍品描述
Expert's note: The hand of a complete Padmapani figure from this period typically accounts for around 10% of the total height, or less. Based on this conservative estimate, the figure to which this hand once belonged would have stood at approximately 120 cm or more. A figure of such size from the 14th century would likely be valued in the millions.Cast with thin and elongated fingers neatly detailed with nails and creases, the hand held in the vitarka mudra and extending to a slender wrist decorated with a draped sleeve, with the stem of a blossom gently resting against a finger.Provenance: English trade. Acquired from a house near Cambridge, United Kingdom.Condition: The fragment in good condition with wear and casting irregularities. Obvious losses, rubbing and flaking to gilt, small dings, scattered nicks and scratches.Weight: 797.3 g Dimensions: Length 14.5 cmThe vitarka mudra symbolizes teaching and discussion. It shows the transmission of knowledge and insight, gained after reaching enlightenment.Literature comparison:Compare a related gilt bronze figure of Padmapani with a similarly modeled albeit smaller hand, Nepal, 14th century, 32.5 cm high, at Christie's New York, 12 September 2012, lot 537.
