China, 17th-18th century or later. The rectangular panel centered by a golden five-clawed frontal-facing dragon chasing the magic pearl, flanked by the endless knot to its right and the parasol to its left, all amid scrolling clouds, and with a blue band of dragons alternating with ruyi-shaped clouds framing the edges. The reverse covered in beige silk. Provenance: Collection of Alexander Foerster, thence by descent to Dr. Michael Foerster, and thence by descent in the same family. Alexander Foerster was an Austrian art dealer and expert who worked as an appraiser of Asian art for the auction house Dorotheum in Vienna during the 1960s.
