'DEER OF LONGEVITY', SHOU LU TU, QING DYNASTYChina, 17th-18th century. Ink, watercolors, and gouache on silk. Mounted as a hanging scroll on a silk frame with wooden handles. Finely painted with a spotted deer and doe standing in a balcony with wan-panel railings and lotus-bud balusters, all under bamboo and a verdant peach tree with blossoms and ripe fruits. The doe grazes on a stray prunus blossom to the corner.Inscriptions: To the top-left edge, 'Shou Lu Tu' ('Deer of Longevity').Provenance: Martin Fong, Hong Kong, circa 2009 (by repute). The collection of Dr. Peter Brown, Sydney, and thence by descent. Dr. Peter Brown was a renowned Sydney medical practitioner with a passion for Chinese art and porcelain. His collection of Ming and Qing dynasty kiln wares and bronzes, treasured in his family for over 20 years, is a rare and valuable legacy.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. Some soiling, browning, stains, and foxing, overall presenting well. The mounting with traces of wear and use.Dimensions: Image size 150 x 85 cm, Size incl. frame 216 x 94 cmThe present scroll is replete with images symbolizing longevity. Peaches, associated with immortality, hang in abundance from a tree beneath which stand a buck and doe, both spotted, and wearing a collar suspending a fly-whisk charm.
