拍品描述
Tibet. Finely cast and incised, the arhat is seated in lalitasana on a rectangular pillow-form base covered by a carpet, the right hand raised in apana mudra and the left resting on his lap holding a fly whisk. Vanavasin is dressed in a monastic robe, pooling elegantly at the base. The face with a serene expression, almond-shaped eyes, and lips forming a gentle smile. Provenance: French trade. Acquired from a private collection of fine Tibetan and Chinese bronzes in Paris, France. Codition: Good condition with ancient wear and expected casting irregularities. Nicks, few scratches, small dents, minor material loss to base. The base has been re-sealed with a copper plate, engraved with a double vajra. Weight: 307 g Dimensions: Height 11.5 cm The arhat Vanavasin is the 3rd arhat from the set of the sixteen great arhats. He is clearly identifiable due to the flywhisk and the characteristic mudra. His name means 'dweller in the forest' and he is celebrated in Buddhist tradition for his ascetic lifestyle and deep meditative insight. Although historical records about his life are sparse and largely rooted in oral tradition, traditional texts describe him as a devoted disciple of the Buddha whose practice of seclusion, mindfulness, and ethical conduct set a lasting example for those seeking enlightenment. Literature comparison: Compare a 18th century Tibeto-Chinese painting of Vanavasin with the same mudra and also holding the flywhisk at Christie's, New York, 16 September 2014, lot 294.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Bonhams Hong Kong, 6 October 2023, lot 30 Price: Sold for HKD 140,800 or approx. EUR 17,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. : A gilt copper alloy figure of an Arhat Expert remark: Compare the closely related modeling with similar pose and base. Note the lost fly-whisk and the larger size (16 cm).
