Souls pass from stage to stage at the decision of a different judge, each of them a King. The third court is lead by King Songdi, and the ninth court by King Pingdeng. Diyu is typically depicted as a subterranean maze with various levels and chambers, to which souls are taken after death to atone for the sins they committed when they were alive.Literature comparison:Compare two closely related paintings of the Ten Kings of Purgatory, depicting King Songdi of the Third Court and the King of the Capital of the Ninth Court, each dated 1800-1869, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession numbers 1770A-1869 and 1770C-1869.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Sotheby's New York, 24 March 2018, lot 1877Price: USD 12,500 or approx.
