拍品描述
The censer of bombe form, set below the flared rim with two beaded mock-ring handles issuing from lion heads with curly manes, and neatly cold-worked with two foliate cartouches enclosing Arabic inscriptions against a minutely ring-punched ground.Inscriptions: To the cartouches, 'Allah al hadi' and 'Ela sabil al janha' ('God is the guide to the path of paradise').Provenance: From a private estate in Camden, Maine, United States. Condition: Very good condition with expected old wear and traces of use, casting irregularities including a small fissure to one side, small nicks, and light surface scratches. Good patina.Weight: 524 g Dimensions: Diameter 11.5 cmThe recessed base cast with an apocryphal six-character mark da Ming Xuande nianzhi within a rectangular reserve.Wares produced with inscriptions derived from Arabic script became particularly popular during the Zhengde reign (1505-1521), as can be seen with various porcelain and bronze vessels of the period. This demand was probably influenced by the large body of influential Muslim advisors, eunuchs and envoys that served in the Imperial Court during this period.Islamic-inspired vessels, such as the present lot, were principally made for export to the Islamic market. The inscriptions are religious or philosophical in content and many are quotations from the Qur'an. It is interesting to note that incense burning was also a popular practice among Muslims in their religious ceremonies.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's Hong Kong, 4 October 2016, lot 51Price: HKD 200,000 or approx.
