China. Well cast in a recumbent pose with the feet tucked beneath the body, the head turned to the left, well detailed with bulging eyes, a single horn, and a fiery mane, the mouth slightly agape. The aperture on the back is lined in gilt. Provenance: French trade. Acquired from a private collection in Paris, France. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, casting flaws, few nicks, and light surface scratches. Fine naturally grown patina.Weight: 668 g (excl. cover) Dimensions: Length 15.5 cmThe fitted cover of lacquered wood set with a green jadeite loop handle. (2)The qilin is one of the most auspicious mythical creatures seen in Chinese art, and is said to live for a thousand years. It is considered to be the noblest of all animals, and a symbol of goodness. The qilin has a dragon-like head, horns, the body of a horse and the hooves of an ox, although exact representations differ throughout the Ming and Qing dynasties.
