拍品描述
Expert authentication: Dr. Chang Qing has authenticated this lot, identifying its iconographic and stylistic characteristics as typical of 8th century Tang images removed from the ruins of pagodas in China. A notarized copy of Dr. Chang's expertise, dated April 20, 2021, in the State of New York, accompanies this lot. Dr. Chang holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Kansas and has held prestigious positions, including post-doctoral fellow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and senior research fellow at the Freer and Sackler Galleries of the Smithsonian Institute. He has conducted extensive research in China, participating in archaeological excavations at various historical sites. Dr. Chang is the author of several influential works, including Compassionate Beings in Metal and Stone: Chinese Buddhist Sculptures from The Freer Gallery of Art (2016) and Light of the Buddha in the Desert: Essays on Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang from 5th-14th Centuries (2012). He is currently a professor at Arts College, Sichuan University.China, 618-907. Exemplifying the classical elegance of Tang sculpture, this rare Parinirvana Buddha is finely carved from a single limestone block. Reclining on a rectangular base, his head rests gently in his right palm, supported by a lotus flower. Draped in long Indian-style robes with stylized folds, his left arm lies gracefully along his body. The round face, with full lips, heavy-lidded eyes, and a prominent chin, conveys a serene expression. His head is surmounted by an ushnisha adorned with neatly incised curls, further emphasizing the dignified tranquility that defines the period.Provenance: From a private collection in New York, United States. Condition: Condition commensurate with age. Wear, losses, structural fissures, encrustations, chips, and nicks. An old repair to the neck and lotus support. Ancient weathering and erosion have largely diminished the once-exceptional polish. Beautiful, naturally developed patina overall. Weight: 17.9 kg Dimensions: Length 59 cm, height 20.5 cmThis rare limestone sculpture masterfully captures one of the most profound moments in the life of the Buddha, his passage into Parinirvana. In Buddhism, Parinirvana refers to nirvana-after-death, the final liberation of one who has attained enlightenment during their lifetime. It signifies ultimate freedom from Samsara, the endless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. It also represents the dissolution of the skandhas, the five aggregates that constitute personal existence, leading to the attainment of absolute peace. In some Mahayana scriptures, particularly the Mahaparinirvana Sutra, Parinirvana is described not as mere cessation but as the realm of the Buddha's eternal, unconditioned true Self. This nuanced interpretation suggests that enlightenment is not an annihilation of being, but rather an awakening to an ultimate, transcendent reality. According to Buddhist chronicles, this pivotal event took place in Kushinagar, a revered site in northern India, where Buddha, lying on his right side beneath the shade of the Sal trees, delivered his final teachings before passing away. Today, Kushinagar remains one of the most sacred pilgrimage destinations for Buddhists worldwide. Literature comparison: Compare a related limestone relief showing Buddha in Parinirvana surrounded by Twelve Disciplines, dating to the Northern Qi Dynasty (550-577) in the collection of the Harvard Museum of Art, Cambridge.
