China, 916-1279. The oval face carved with a serene expression, heavy-lidded eyes centered by an urna, bow shaped lips, full cheeks, the tight rows of hair surmounted by a tall diadem decorated with beaded garlands above an ornate band. The stone of a rich gray color with beige veins and inclusions.Provenance: French trade. Acquired from an old private estate. By repute, the piece has been in the same family for several generations and the hardwood base has been added in France during the first half of the 20th century. Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, obvious losses, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, structural fissures, nicks, scratches.Weight: 5.3 kg (incl. collar), 6.6 kg (total) Dimensions: Height 22.5 cm (incl. collar), 34.3 cm (incl. stand and collar)The head has been fitted with a hardwood collar, which has been mounted to a wooden stand. (3)The Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, the Chinese goddess of Mercy and Compassion, or Guanyin in Chinese, historically has been one of the most popular and most favoured Buddhist deities in China and has therefore been frequently depicted in sculptural form. Bodhisattvas are enlightened beings who have put off entering paradise in order to help others attain enlightenment. Guanyin is usually depicted as a beautiful female figure with a warm smile. She appears worldly and is in sharp contrast to the plain images of the Buddha, hence emphasizing her non-ethereal status.Literature comparison:Compare a related limestone head of a bodhisattva, dated 12th-13th century, 77.2 cm tall, in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, accession number 2000.86.1. Note the similar iconographic features and the beaded details to the crown.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Sotheby's New York, 20 March 2019, lot 563Estimate: USD 30,000 or approx.
