拍品描述
Northern India. The silver-damascened hilt of the khanjar (dagger) is shaped as an ibex head, adorned with foliate and scrolling borders. Its curved blade is inlaid on both sides with a stylized inscription in silver wire. The scabbard is similarly decorated, featuring inscriptions interspersed with scrolling vines, all enclosed within a band of leaves.Provenance: From an old private collection in southern Germany, assembled between 1961 and 2003.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities. Surface wear, abrasion, corrosion, minor nicks and scratches, and expected wear to inlays.Weight: 336.5 g Dimensions: Length 31.5 cmThe art of koftgari damascening was brought to India by Persian craftsmen after the Mughal ruler's invasion in the 16th century. In India, it was mainly used as a means to decorate arms and weaponry. In this technique, the surface of the metal object to be ornamented is evenly scratched to create a rough, finely lined surface, heated on a stove until red hot and then allowed to cool naturally. The object is then clamped and silver or gold wire is laid on the abraded metallic surface and pressed. Then the wire is further flattened with the aid of opni or moonstone.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's New York, 23 March 1999, lot 71Price: USD 2,760 or approx.
