India, Rajasthan. Finely carved in a recumbent pose atop an oval base with three feet tucked under the body and the right front leg raised with the knee bent. The head turned and the tail swept to one side, adorned with a necklace suspending bells, the face with wide eyes, a gold halter with geometric pattern, flanked by large ears. The humped back covered with a diaphanous blanket.Provenance: From a private collection in Rome, Italy.Condition: Old wear, small chips, nicks, few scratches, minor cracks. Expected flaking and rubbing to gilt and pigments. Old repairs and losses to the horns.Weight: 11,617 gDimensions: Length 32.3 cm, Height 22 cmNandi is Shiva's mount and the gatekeeper of Shiva in Hindu mythology. He is seen as full of joy (nandi) in the presence of his master.
