A MOLDED QAJAR POTTERY TILE PANEL, DEPICTING A ROYAL BANQUET, PERSIA, 19TH CENTURYOf rectangular form, composed of fifteen tiles, each tile painted in bright tones of green, blue, yellow, and red beneath a clear glaze to depict a court banquet with a ruler kneeling on the ground. He is flanked by two standing attendants as four courtiers sit on stools before a central incense burner, all surrounded by various fruits and vessels under a foliate arch, decorated to the spandrels with simurghs, all enclosed by foliate bands.Provenance: Collection of Hugh Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster, by family repute acquired in Persia by a previous resident of the Grosvenor summer residence on the Isle of Wight, thence by descent. A private collection in the United Kingdom, acquired from the above. Hugh Richard Arthur Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster, GCVO, DSO (1879-1953), was a wealthy British landowner who was noted for his affair with French designer Coco Chanel, which lasted ten years. The duke gave her extravagant jewels, costly art, and purchased a home for Chanel in London's prestigious Mayfair district, and in 1927 gave her a parcel of land on the French Riviera at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin where Chanel built her villa, La Pausa. Condition: Good condition with wear and manufacturing irregularities including glaze lines, dark spots, burst bubbles, and pitting. Small chips, flaking, and tiny losses to edges. Minor old repairs.
