A LARGE BRONZE FIGURE OF GANESHA, KHMER STYLE, 18TH-19TH CENTURYRattanakosin Kingdom, Siam, 1782-1932 or earlier. Seated in dhyanasana on a rectangular plinth, the hands placed on the lap and clasped around a broken tusk and modak. Adorned with jewelry, the elephant head deity is clad in a short sampot elegantly tied with a stylized tang to the back. The serene face with a curling trunk, flaring ears, and wide eyes, the hair secured in a conical chignon, backed by a tiara.Provenance: From the private collection of Olivier Marechal, Belgium, acquired 2007 in Thailand. A copy of a provenance statement, written and signed by Olivier Marechal, dated 15 November 2024, confirming the above, accompanies this lot. Olivier Marechal (b. 1973) is a noted Belgian collector and dealer specializing in the arts of India, Vietnam, and Thailand. He began his career in the mid-1990s, learning from his father who helped him with his first purchases. He later managed Surya Gallery in Brussels, Belgium.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, casting irregularities, signs of weathering and erosion, minuscule losses, and scattered nicks and scratches. Ancient cement residue. The bronze with a naturally grown patina with vibrant malachite encrustations.Weight: 8,980 gDimensions: Height 26.6 cm A popular Hindu deity, Ganesha was introduced to Cambodian artists in the 7th century. Over the next five centuries, India's chubby elephant icon was transformed into a sleek, anthropomorphic figure. He sits meditatively in a classic lotus position, holding his own broken tusk.
