A SANDSTONE BAS-RELIEF FRAGMENT DEPICTING A HUNTING SCENE, BAYON STYLEKhmer Empire, period of King Jayavarman VII, late 12th to early 13th century. Finely carved to depict a man hunting a boar with a spear, the figure dressed in a short sampot, his hands raised as he aims to pierce his weapon through the animal's back, under a large tree bearing blade-like leaves, and above a geometric band.Provenance: From a private estate in the United Kingdom. Condition: Good condition with old wear, obvious losses, chips, scratches, rubbing, soiling, encrustations, and signs of weathering and erosion. Weight: 4,355 g (incl. stand)Dimensions: Height 19 cm, Length 23 cmThe present lot closely resembles bas-reliefs at a number of temples built by King Jayavarman VII during the late 12th and early 13th century. He was the first king devoted to Buddhism, and built the Bayon as a monument to Buddhism. Jayavarman VII is generally considered the most powerful of the Khmer monarchs by historians. His government built many projects including hospitals, roads, rest houses, and temples.
