拍品描述
Expert's note: Primarily associated with the god Vishnu, the conch was used in both Hindu and Buddhist rituals in late 12th and early 13th century Khmer Empire, when a unique theology, incorporating various beliefs, developed as a result of the last of the great Hindu god-kings, Jayavarman VII, converting to Buddhism, after which Buddhist art flourished. Blown at the beginning of ceremonies, the instrument makes the sound of the sacred syllable ''Om,'' believed to purify the mind before meditation. Khmer Empire, late 12th to early 13th century. This rare conch-shaped offering vessel retains its original tripod base, its feet cast in the form of the serpent king Naga, with a seven-headed hood unfurled in protection. The conch is finely adorned with dot and flame motifs along its border and a spiral base. Within an ornamental niche, a multi-armed deity is depicted in high relief. The bronze has developed a smooth, naturally grown patina with malachite encrustations. (2)Provenance: The Moreau collection, Paris, France, by 2004 and thence by descent. A copy of an authenticity certificate issued by Michel Cohen, expert, Paris, dated 09.09.2004, confirming the dating above, accompanies this lot.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Casting irregularities, wear, signs of weathering and corrosion, soil encrustations, few small nicks and dents, losses, all as expected.
