A BRONZE FRAGMENT OF A FOUR-ARMED DEITY, ANGKOR PERIOD

拍品描述
Khmer Empire, Bayon Style, c. 13th century. The deity is wearing a classical, ornate headdress, his face with almond-shaped eyes, and full lips with a gentle smile, flanked by pendulous earlobes. On his left side remnants of two arms are visible. The original casting core is mostly in place, visible at the breakages. The torso stems from a remarkably large bronze which makes it a rare find. Provenance: Private collection, Sussex, UK. Condition: Extensive wear, signs of weathering and erosion, obvious losses, nicks, and structural cracks. Overall presenting well with its rich, naturally grown patina. Weight: 1,972 g (without the stand) Dimensions: Height 24 cm (excl. stand) and 31,5 cm (incl. stand) With a modern metal display stand (2). Expert's note: Many four-armed male figures from the Angkor Wat period depict the Hindu god Vishnu. Towards the end of the twelfth century, however, images of Lokeshvara and other Buddhist deities began to proliferate in almost stylistically indistinguishable fashion, as King Jayavarman VII (reigned 1181-1218) adopted Mahayana Buddhism as the official state religion, replacing the cult of Vishnu which had predominated the Khmer empire for previous centuries. The identity of this deity hence is almost impossible to discern without its iconographic features which would normally appear as objects held by the missing hands.
