拍品描述
China, 1662-1722. Delicately potted, the sides rising from a short straight foot and carved in remarkably fine anhua with two scaly five-clawed dragons in pursuit of flaming pearls, all amid flames and lingzhi shaped clouds. Provenance: The collection of Sir Mark Heath and thence by descent within the same family. Zacke, Vienna, 15 October 2021, lot 222, sold for EUR 8,216 or approx. EUR 10,000 (adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). Collection of Dr. John Bannard (1941-2023), Nottingham, United Kingdom, acquired from the above and thence by descent. The base with an old collector's label from the 'M. E. Heath Collection', another old label inscribed by hand in Chinese, 'Yongle guanyao' ('Imperial kiln of Yongle') and 'Baotai longwan' ('Eggshell dragon bowl'), and a third label with a collector's number '941'. Sir Mark Evelyn Heath KCVO CMG (1927-2005) was a British diplomat who served as the United Kingdom's first Ambassador to the Holy See between 1982 and 1985. His appointment represented the resumption of full diplomatic relations between Britain and the Holy See for the first time since Henry VIII's break with the Catholic Church in 1534. After leaving the Vatican, Sir Mark became Head of Protocol for the Hong Kong Government. During this time he developed a passion for Chinese works of art. Dr. John Bannard (1941-2023) was a British scientist who started his career at Nottingham University, then moving to The University of Limerick to found the faculty of Industrial Chemistry. He later started his own company, holding patents for the invention of laser activated inks, and the development of medical sterilization inks. His true passion, however, was collecting paintings and works of art, and it was his lifelong ambition to open his own gallery upon retirement, a dream he sadly was never able to realize as he retired at the ripe age of 82.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and minimal firing irregularities, the rim with two near-invisible hairlines (both approx. 4 cm long).Weight: 148.9 g Dimensions: Diameter 16.5 cmThe recessed base carved in anhua with an apocryphal four-character mark Yongle nianzhi.Expert's note:The incredibly well-carved anhua decoration, the superb pottery work, and the even, unctuous glaze altogether leave no doubt that the present bowl is a work from the early Qing period at the latest.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 9 October 2020, lot 3641Price: HKD 302,400 or approx. EUR 40,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing: A fine and rare tianbai anhua-decorated 'dragon' bowl, Qing dynasty, Kangxi periodExpert remark: Compare the closely related tianbai glaze and incised anhua decoration, as well as the near identical four-character Yongle mark. Note the size (12.5 cm) and different form.
