拍品描述
China, late 17th to early 18th century. Of beehive form, finely decorated in relief with a clambering chilong, the beast glazed green with aubergine splashes, the vessel covered in an imperial yellow glaze, the reverse decorated with an aubergine taiji symbol, the rim and base left white. Provenance: The Ionides Collection, and thence by family descent to Lady Camilla Panufnik. Born to a leading Anglo-Jewish family with trade connections in China and Japan, Nellie Ionides (1883-1962) was well known as a collector, connoisseur, philanthropist, and expert on Chinese porcelain. She married Basil Ionides (1884-1950), a member of the Greek shipping family, who, like her own, were great patrons and philanthropists. Basil Ionides is particularly remembered as the pioneering Art Deco designer of The Savoy Theatre and Claridges. Nellie and Basil Ionides shared a love of the arts and were both collectors, bequeathing items to various museums, including the Victoria and Albert. Nellie had a special admiration for Chinese porcelain, especially the blue and white and famille verte wares of the Kangxi period, and has been credited with having an almost intuitive gift for discovering museum quality pieces in the Brighton Lanes, the Tunbridge Wells Pantiles, and the antique shops and auction houses of Sussex, Surrey, and London. Her granddaughter Lady Camilla Panufnik (b. 1937, nee Jessel), the widow of Polish composer and conductor Andrzej Panufnik, has observed: ''My grandmother, Nellie Ionides, was an impassioned collector. She loved each item that she found, had restored and brought home. At the end of her life, when she realized that almost everything would have to be sold to cover her death duties, she used to say she only wished she could be present at the sales to see who bought her favorite treasures, and indeed, to see how much they all went for under the auctioneer's hammer.''Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities including few dark spots, two small chips to the chilong's head and horn.Weight: 249.4 g Dimensions: Height 9.5 cmThe recessed base with an apocryphal underglaze-blue four-character mark Wanli nianzhi.Susancai (素三彩) is a Chinese ceramic glaze technique, meaning "plain three colors". It features a subdued palette, often in shades of white, yellow, green, and brown, contrasting with the brighter sancai wares. Susancai pieces, typically lead-glazed, were used for both decorative and funerary purposes, emphasizing elegance and restraint. The taibo zun is of a classic dome shape typical of the Kangxi reign, originally inspired by the wine pot of the legendary Tang dynasty poet, Li Bai (AD 701-762). The poet, notorious for his drinking, is often depicted leaning against a wine jar of this form. The shape is sometimes also referred to as a jizhao zun, as it resembles a chicken coop. The chilong clambering around the shoulder is a classic variation of this type that allows the piece to further function as a brush holder. It became increasingly popular during the 18th century and is also found on examples in jade and bronze as well as other forms including vases.Literature comparison:Compare a related sancai-glazed waterpot with clambering chilong, dated to the Kangxi period, in the collection of the Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna, inventory number KE 8267.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 25 November 2022, lot 339 Price: HKD 81,900 or approx.
