拍品描述
Expert's note: This dish belongs to a small group of enamel wares from Canton, which may have been made by Imperial command, around 1730, as imitation of the finest quality of export porcelain wares from the period. Only few are known, see auction result comparison below for two closely related examples.China, 18th century. The interior brightly decorated with a butterfly fluttering above sprays of peonies, peaches, magnolia, and morning glory among others. The central motif framed by a key-fret border and set within a diaper pattern along the cavetto. The diaper band further embellished with medallions featuring kui dragons and delicate floral cartouches. The exterior is similarly decorated with dense scrollwork bearing lotus blossoms and bats framed by a band of blue and white scrolls above and pink scrolls below. The recessed base centered by a pair of finger citrons borne on leafy stems. Provenance: From a private estate in Turkey. The base with two labels, 'no 4516' and 'no P3932'. Condition: Good condition with minor wear, firing irregularities, expected stress lines, small repairs with touchups along the exterior rim, light dents, and surface scratches. The colors are fresh and crisp, the dish is thus displaying exceptionally well.Weight: 598 g Dimensions: Diameter 26.4 cmThis dish, made with painted enamels over a copper body, echoes the style of export porcelain from the same period. Its imagery is layered with symbolism: the butterfly, representing union, and the peony, symbolizing prosperity, form a rebus for a harmonious marriage or a flourishing life. This elegant combination expresses wishes for both love and wealth, making it a powerful emblem of beauty and success. The rather unusual form of this dish, somewhere between a plate and a bowl, is known as a soup dish. In 18th-century China, soup was an essential part of daily life, often made with meats, herbs, and medicinal ingredients to balance the body's energy and promote health.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Sotheby's New York, 11 September 2019, lot 870Price: USD 11,250 or approx.
