拍品描述
China, 618-907. The slender lady wearing a long-sleeved coat with padded low neckline, epaulets and elbows over layers of robes with different designs and shoes with elaborate up-turned toes. The face subtly modeled and finely painted in a demure expression with full cheeks, slender red lips, and thick brows. The hair neatly combed away from the face and fashioned into a tall coiffure.Provenance: Collection of Gottfried Henrich Crone, Amsterdam, and thence by descent. Gottfried Henrich Crone (1884-1961) was born to Eduard Henrich Crone (1852-1918) and Helena Rebecca Ernestine Muller (1862-1945). His father was a prominent merchant, working for the firm HG Th. Crone, a trading company that imported agricultural products from the Dutch East Indies and exported luxury goods. A love of art was instilled in him from an early age. His parents were active art collectors, with an emphasis on the Hague School of painting.Condition: Overall presenting very well, and commensurate with age, as expected from Tang dynasty excavations. Losses, chips, encrustations, repairs, and touchups. Extensive wear and fading to pigments.Weight: 924 gDimensions: Height 37.4 cmThis exquisitely molded aristocratic lady provides a fascinating portrait of Tang courtly style. Her elaborately stylized headdress and low bodice are both Persian in inspiration, indicating the extent to which foreign fashions - particularly those of Turkic and Iranian origin - were in vogue among members of the Tang court in the 8th century. Men and women often dressed in foreign fashions and welcomed foreign dance and music at their parties and court entertainments. Fashion changed remarkably quickly during the first century of the Tang dynasty. Notice her large, puffy shoes. The slender, elaborately coiffured woman depicted here would have looked out of place among the plump women of style of the 700s.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related painted pottery figure of a standing court lady, dated to the Tang dynasty, 7th-8th century, 38.4 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 1978.345.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Sotheby's New York, 16 December 2024, lot 71Price: USD 11,400 or approx.
