拍品描述
Published & Exhibited: Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Exhibition of Chinese Works of Art, Weisbrod Chinese Art, New York, 26 March-2 April 1996, p. 92-93, no. 47.Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 18 February 2025, based on sample number P125b94, sets the firing date of one sample taken between 550 and 800 years ago, consistent with the dating above. A copy of the report accompanies this lot.China, 1127-1279. The jar of ovoid form, tapering towards the flat base, decorated with a broad band of dark iron-brown leafy scrolls between raised 'pie-crust' borders above the base and below the mouth-rim, centered to one side with a pagoda-shaped window perhaps containing an inscription at one time. The cover surmounted by a bud-shaped finial, with similar scrolling vines divided by raised bands of 'pie-crust'. The jar and cover overall covered in a pale celadon glaze stopping shortly above the raised line, the interior and base unglazed revealing the pale gray ware partially burnt to orange.Provenance: Weisbrod Chinese Art, New York, USA, by 1996. Michael B. Weisbrod is a noted scholar of Chinese art, who has published extensively on the subject over a time span of more than 50 years. In 1972, Michael joined his father Dr. Gerald Weisbrod's Asian art gallery in Toronto, Canada. The father-and-son team opened their New York location on Madison Avenue in 1977, and during the next 45 years the gallery held a significant number of exhibitions, selling to museums and private collectors across the globe, eventually adding further locations in Shanghai and Hong Kong. Condition: Good condition commensurate with age. Minor wear, firing irregularities including firing cracks, dark spots, few hairline cracks, small repairs, little touchups, and two filled holes from sample taking to the bottom rim.Weight: 13.6 g Dimensions: Height 62 cmThis jar appears to be from Fujian province and of a yingqing type. Although no other similarly massive jar of this type appears to be recorded, there are other shapes with this style of painting and glaze.Literature comparison:Compare an earlier ovoid jar with raised bands and a similar glaze, dated to ca. 500-600, 21 cm tall, in the Asian Art Museum, Object number B60P150. Compare a related jar with a 'pie-crust' band to the shoulder and with brown leafy sprays under a greenish-toned glaze, Fujian, dated to the Song dynasty, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 1985.218a, b. Compare a related lidded funerary urn, dated to the early Northern Song dynasty, in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, accession number M.91.233.2a-b.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's New York, 25 March 2015, lot 8018Price: USD 8,750 or approx.
