Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 18 February 2025, based on sample number P125b90, sets the firing date of the two samples taken between 600 and 1000 years ago, consistent with the dating above. A copy of the report accompanies this lot.China, 960-1234. The compressed globular body tapering towards the mouth, supported on a short foot, covered in a thick crackle- and bubble-suffused sky-blue glaze transitioning to a streaky dark blue and brown at the rim, continuing over the mouth to the interior, the glaze falling short above the foot in a thick irregular line with attractive pooling, the unglazed body of a reddish-brown color. Provenance: Ex Carfrae Collection (according to inscription to label). Compagnie de la Chine et des Indes, Paris. Bluett & Sons, London, acquired from the above on 30 May 1923 for £5. Collection of John Warrack, Edinburgh, acquired from the above on 13 June 1923 for £7 (according to the Bluett archive), and thence by descent. A private collection in the United Kingdom, acquired from the above, and thence by descent. The base with an old label from Bluett & Sons, inscribed 'Carfrae. W.17'. The Compagnie de la Chine et des Indes (China and India Company) in Paris was founded in the early 20th century by the Blazy brothers, acquired in 1935 by Robert Rousset and later run by his grandnephews Mike Winter-Rousset and Herve du Peuty. With his sister Suzanne in charge of the porcelain, Robert Rousset developed the business, and the company became one of the most important dealers for Asian art in France, selling pieces to the greatest museums, including the Guimet and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Bluett & Sons was an important dealer of Chinese works of art, founded by brothers Leonard and Edgar Bluett and later continued by Leonard's son Roger Bluett, who was president of the British Antique Dealers' Association, of which his father and uncle were founding members in 1919. Roger Bluett was also Chairman of the Grosvenor House Antiques, first Chairman of the ceramics course at West Dean and first Chairman of the Museum of East Asian Art, Bath. John Warrack (1863-1936) was a notable Scottish collector who had a doctorate in legal studies and was based in Edinburgh. He lent a glazed jar for the London International Exhibition of Chinese Art at the Royal Academy of Arts, and published a book on Greek sculpture in 1912. Condition: Good condition with minor wear, two hairlines running from the mouth towards the base, two small chips to the mouth, minor touchups.
