A GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF THE STANDING BUDDHA, PROBABLY SIXTEEN KINGDOMS PERIOD

拍品描述
Expert's note: The lacquer gilding is a later addition, most likely applied in Japan during the late Edo or Meiji period. The original gilding appears to be entirely worn off, a strong indicator of significant age. Additionally, distinct remnants of resilient red pigments are visible in the folds of the robe, confirming the figure's religious use in ancient times. The literature comparison below shows a similar but much smaller example, also dated to the Sixteen Kingdoms period, 4th century, in the Kyoto National Museum. In Sixteen Kingdoms period, we sometimes find works that not only show a strong Korean influence, but also in fact were made in Korea for Chinese patrons. This could be the case with the present lot. While Korea was not directly part of the Sixteen Kingdoms period, the political chaos in northern China influenced the region, particularly through Goguryeo's military and territorial expansion into former Chinese-controlled areas and interactions with northern nomadic states like the Xianbei-led Later Yan.China or Korea, circa 304-439 or later. Cast standing in samabhanga on a tall lotus base with beaded rim, his right hand raised in abhaya mudra and his left lowered holding the folds of the robe, dressed in loose robes draped over both shoulders and cascading in richly carved folds. The serene face with almond-shaped eyes and bow-shaped lips framed by a curled moustache, flanked by pendulous earlobes, the neatly incised hair pulled up into a topknot. Provenance: The private collection of M. Bretagne, Var, southern France, and thence by descent to his wife (by repute). A private collection in France, acquired from the above via the local trade. Condition: Good condition with old wear, casting irregularities, rubbing to the gilt, nicks, surface scratches, and remnants of red pigments. Few tiny malachite encrustations. Weight: 751 g Dimensions: Height 24.4 cmThe figure has several characteristics that show a strong influence of stone Buddhist statues made in Gandhara, including striated lines of hair (instead of curls), clearly defined eyes, a conspicuous moustache, and the robe that is draped in parallel folds over both shoulders.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related gilt bronze figure of a standing Buddha, dated to the Sixteen Kingdoms period, 4th century, 15.5 cm high, in the Kyoto National Museum, photo number 170914_CL_0017.
