拍品描述
Kushan period, 2nd-3rd century. Finely worked in relief to depict Buddha seated in dhyanasana on an ornate throne detailed with gilt, dressed in loose robes and backed by a halo, his hands folded on the lap, flanked by devotees and servants, and a column to the right. The robes finely draped over their bodies and falling in neatly incised pleads. The hairs wavy and their faces detailed with almond shaped eyes.Provenance: Bernard Le Gall, Galerie Arts et Civilisation, Quimper, France, 2013. Bernard Le Gall (b. 1948) is a French dealer and expert of Asian art, who has run his own gallery in the Breton commune of Quimper, named Galerie Arts et Civilisation, since 1980.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive ancient wear, obvious losses and old repairs, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, chips, cracks.Weight: 2.2 kg (incl. stand) Dimensions: Size 22.1 x 11.6 cm (excl. stand)Mounted to a modern stand. (2) This relief captures a pivotal moment in the life of the Buddha. According to the Mahāvastu, after attaining enlightenment, the Buddha hesitated to teach, fearing that the world would reject his insights. Sensing his reluctance, Brahma, accompanied by Indra and other gods, implored him to preach and "set rolling the wheel of the dharma" (see Jones, The Mahāvastu, Vol. 3, London, 1956, pp. 302-309).This scene serves as a key episode within a broader narrative, foreshadowing the formation of the sangha and the dissemination of Buddhist teachings. In the historical context of Gandhara, it reflects Buddhism's expansion and its doctrinal shift away from Vedic traditions, emphasized through the gods' appeal to the Buddha.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related schist relief depicting the same subject in the British Museum, registration number 1899,0715.10.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's New York, 25 March 2004, lot 2 Price: USD 7,767 or approx.
