A GRAY SCHIST FIGURE OF A BODHISATTVA, ANCIENT REGION OF GANDHARA

Kushan period, 2nd-3rd century. Seated in dhyanasana on a throne supported by three birds and two kneeling worshippers flanked by pensive bodhisattvas, all raised on a plinth carved with a band of flowerheads. His hands are folded in dhyanamudra above his lap and he is wearing a richly pleated dhoti and shawl with skillfully carved folds. His chest, face, and arms are richly adorned with fine jewelry. His face with a serene expression marked by almond-shaped eyes, aquiline nose, moustache, and smiling lips, the hair secured by a turban.Provenance: Collection of Yvette Starck, Luxembourg, and thence by descent to Jacques Grosbusch, Luxembourg. A copy of a provenance statement, written and signed by Jacques Grosbusch, dated 31 July 2024, and confirming the above, accompanies this lot.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, obvious losses, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, chips, nicks, scratches, and few small fissures.Weight: 11.9 kgDimensions: Height 43 cmBefore he became a Buddha, Shakyamuni was a bodhisattva who lived a sheltered life as a prince in a royal palace.
