拍品描述
Korea. The body elegantly rising to a broad shoulder surmounted by a waisted neck with everted rim, inlaid in black and white slip and covered in a pale celadon glaze, decorated with a broad central band enclosing a sinuous dragon, below a band of blossoms at the shoulder, alternating with three thinner bands of geometric design, and a band of wide lappets encircling the foot. Provenance: European private collection. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, firing irregularities including kiln grit and dark spots, and few minor losses to the inlays.Weight: 4.8 kg Dimensions: Height 40.5 cmBuncheong ware developed from the earlier Goryeo celadon inlay technique called sanggam and rapidly distinguished itself. In contrast to the refined elegance of Goryeo celadon, buncheong is designed to be natural, unassuming, and practical. This style is characterized by its pale blue-green color and decorative techniques, which involved shaping the clay and then covering it in white slip and decorating it by carving, stamping, and brushwork. The shortage of metal in the beginning of the Joseon dynasty pushed ceramic consumption to new heights. A royal decree in the Taejong sillok (Annals of Taejong [r. 1400-1418]) states, 'Instead of metalware, every person in the nation must use ceramics or lacquerware.' Such government initiatives encouraged a flourishing buncheong industry that catered to both the elite and commoners.Literature comparison:Compare a related buncheong jar with dragon, dated to the Joseon dynasty, 48.5 cm, in the National Museum of Korea, accession number Deoksu 2411.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Bonhams New York, 15 March 2017, lot 7043 Price: USD 11,250 or approx. EUR 13,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : A buncheong stoneware maebyeong with inlaid decoration, Joseon dynasty, 15th century Expert remark: Compare the closely related decoration with similar slip inlay and glaze. Note the size (29.2 cm).
