拍品描述
China. Of ovoid form with waisted neck and splayed foot, applied with subtly molded and finely enameled handles in the form of gnarled flowering prunus branches, decorated predominantly in shades of cobalt blue with Shen Gongbao riding a golden striped tiger and fighting against a warrior on horseback, surrounded by five winged Leizhenzi above, below a scene of two immortals debating over a script at the neck. The recessed base carved with a four-character mark in a brown-enameled square.Provenance: Collection of Karl Wilhelm Gerdhem, Sweden, thence by decent in the family. Karl Wilhelm Gerdhem (1868-1932) was a distinguished Swedish technologist, engineer, and collector of Chinese porcelain. He played a key role in early 20th-century telecommunications, working with SAT and Ericsson to develop networking infrastructure. During his time in Beijing in the early 1900s, and particularly while negotiating network construction in Guangzhou (1914-1915), Gerdhem acquired a significant collection of Chinese works of art. At the outbreak of World War I, he returned to Sweden, bringing with him an extensive assemblage of Chinese porcelain and other artifacts.Condition: Good condition with minor wear, the upper rim with a shallow chip and a thin hairline, and a firing crack to the interior of the mouth.Weight: 4,9 kg Dimensions: Height 42.4 cmThis animated scene derives from the famous 16th century novel Fengshen Bang (The Investiture of the Gods). Based on events from ancient dynastic history, the story describes the downfall of the Shang dynasty crumbling under the tyrannical rule of a dissolute and depraved ruler and its conquest by the righteous King Wen of Zhou whose son, King Wu, established the succeeding Zhou dynasty. The novel's vividly described conflict is fantastically augmented by an array of immortals, spirits and demons fighting alongside humans vying for supremacy, establishing a correlation between the actions of a ruler and divinely granted right to rule. Only a wise and benevolent sovereign could inspire the necessary loyalty from both men and celestial beings to be granted the Mandate of Heaven, a concept first used by Zhou rulers to support their conquest of the Shang, and persisted throughout Chinese dynastic history.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's London, 4 September 2012, lot 50Price: GBP 1,750 or approx.
