Born in Taishan, Guangdong Province, Yin Doon Wong was an entrepreneur and social activist based in San Francisco. He served as a consultant to the Office of the President of the Kuomingtang and played a significant role in fundraising efforts for the Chinese air force during the Second Sino-Japanese War. In recognition of his unwavering support, he was invited to dine with Soong Mei-ling (1898-2003) during her visit to the United States in 1943. That same year, The Chinese Nationalist Daily (Kuo Min Yat Po), founded by Mr. Wong, compiled the bilingual publication Madame Chiang Kai-shek's Trip through the United States and Canada, featuring over 160 photos documenting her historic trip.
Mr. Wong was an avid collector of Chinese paintings. When the Cantonese artists Zhao Shao'ang and Yang Shanshen held solo exhibitions during the 1950s-60s in the United States, they were invited to view Mr. Wong's collection, which included the present lot. Another painting by Gao Jianfu on the same subject, in a similar style and dimensions, Four Carps, was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, Fine Chinese Modern Paintings, 1 December 2015, lot 1540, which also contains a colophon by Zhao Shao'ang on its silk mount.
