- Chengde architectural figure. First built as a cool summer retreat in 1703 for the Kangxi emperor (ruled 1662-1722), the Palace at Chengde was substantially extended by the Qianlong emperor (ruled 1736-1795). It took a total of 89 years to complete. The mountain resort encompasses 72 scenic spots from all over China, and includes many different architectural styles and landscapes. This stoneware figure, glazed in amber, green and turquoise, was collected from Chengde in the 1800s. It has a detachable head, which can be set at an angle to be viewed from below.
