A MASSIVE IRON SWORD WITH A PARCEL-GILT SILVER MOUNTED WOOD SCABBARD, KOTHIMORA KUKRI, NEPAL, 19TH CENTURY
This lot is a museum deaccession and is therefore offered without reserve

Of classical form with a wide curved single-edged iron blade with a sword-form design (butta) with S-shape swirls (ankuri), over a notch (kaudi) with a nathri (nozzle). Fitted to a copper-hilt incised with bowstrings (dora) above the ridge (harhari) and sealed to the butt cap (chapri) with a lonzenge form keeper (fulla) and tail (puchchaar).

The wooden scabbard covered in leather and ornately decorated in parcel-gilt silver to the chape (kothi) and locket, the later with a lobed panel enclosing a lotus blossom below a kiritmukha and under a rectangular panel with coral-cabochons to the corners, enclosing a sinuous dragon, all against finely incised foliate scrolls. The mouth of the sheath with apertures to fit the chakmak (sharpening knife) and karda (small knife).

Provenance: Galerie Hardt (established in 1976), Radevormwald, Germany, before 2020. Acquired by the gallery’s founder Peter Hardt (b. 1946) during his extensive travels in Asia, the first of which occurred during a formative world tour in 1973. Throughout his storied career, Peter Kienzle-Hardt organized countless exhibitions and participated in major international art fairs. He made many important contacts during this time and eventually met the Kienzle siblings, who shared his passion for Asian art and culture. A strong bond and deep friendship developed, ultimately leading to the creation of the Museum für Asiatische Kunst decades later in 2014. While the museum’s permanent exhibition predominantly comprised pieces from the Kienzle Family Collection, Peter Kienzle-Hardt supplemented it with objects from his own collection. Before his death in 2019, Horst Kienzle bequeathed his entire property to Peter and legally adopted him as his son, who has been using the name Peter Kienzle-Hardt ever since.
Labels: Galerie Hardt, inscribed ‘S782, H:150 B:15 T:60', priced at EUR 5,750.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities. The iron sword with tarnishing. The chape and neck of the scabbard with dings and warping. The silver mountings slightly loose. The copper hilts with a naturally grown patina.

Weight: 7.8 kg
Dimensions: Length 141 cm (sword), 120 cm (scabbard), 38 cm (karda), 25 cm (chakmak), 145 cm (together)

The present sword is in the form of kukri or khukuri, a type of knife or short sword with a distinct recurve in its blade that originated in the Indian subcontinent. It serves multiple purposes as a melee weapon and also as a regular cutting tool throughout most of South Asia. The national weapon of Nepal, the kukri traditionally served the role of a basic utility knife for the Nepali-speaking Gurkhas, and consequently is a characteristic weapon of the Nepali Army.
